Speaking of the holodeck, it's hands-down the coolest
concept created for Star Trek. Every
Trek fan wants their own holodeck.
It sort of hearkened back to the original pilot where the
aliens were able to create the interactive illusions for Captain Pike. The vision was there back then, but they
didn't have a way to make it come to life.
There was a lot of versatility in it. As I mentioned before, if they needed a nature setting for a small portion of the show, they didn't have to be tied into a story that took place on a planet. It was perfect for taking crew members on dates, or leisurely horseback rides, or even a nice place to hold a memorial service.
You had the practical applications such as Tasha's aikido
program and also other sporting gyms and target practice.
Of course, there was always some crazy things going on in
there that couldn't be explained with characters coming to life and finding
ways to control the ship. But we went
with it, because it was fun.
Of course, I'm not so naive as to not realize what everyone
would probably really use a holodeck for.
But that subject couldn't really be broached on the honorable Starship
Enterprise. The closest we ever saw was
Barkley's fantasy world.
It was only right that Quark on DS9 made the most popular
use of these wonderful interactive fun rooms.
Lol!
But the fun never stopped and it continued to be the most
creative outlet on the all of the spin off shows.
