Dragonology, Dugald Steer
Fictional author: Dr. Earnest Drake
This book was as much fun as it looked liked. I posted pics from inside of it about a month ago. It's for kids but all fantasy lovers will love it. It's a comprehensive guide to the scientific study of dragons as penned by Dr. Earnest Drake in the 1800s. It's filled with illustrations and samples of various things pertaining to dragons and those who study them. Scale "specimens" are scattered throughout different pages. Pull away diagrams showing a dragon's egg and embryonic growth and a body atlas detailing surface, muscles, and skeletal structure of a full grown dragon add a nice touch. It has a wonderful map that folds out on both sides showing the native locations of the various species. There are small one or two page books with journal entries and riddles as well as sealed envelopes that you can open to find other spells. And instructions on how to use parts of the desceced dragon in potions and such. It's all just creative and relaxing to look through. Good for smiles. Especially for adults because the humor may be a little dry for kids to pick up on. The book itself is large and not portable. The pages are thick like cardboard to hold all of the embedded goodies like the scale samples and dragon dust. It's better suited as a coffee table book. A fair warning if you're giving it to a child - the dragon dust is glitter so, it could potentially make a mess.
It's one of many in the "Ology" series. I'll post pictures of the others. But I don't see this format working as well with the other subjects presented, except maybe Monsters. So, I don't know if I'll ever try any others. But this was worth it.
